Tom Clancy's "Rainbow Six" series of video games has been a very consistent set of shooters. "Rainbow Six 3" continues the great tradition of good game-play. This is a very realistic first-person shooter that is different than previous games and even games after it. This game sticks out to me as one of the better shooters for the Xbox.
"Rainbow Six 3" has great graphics for its day and age. Looking at it now makes the gamer long for more detail.Ubisoft did a great job with the lighting.
They being the ones that brought "Splinter Cell," you shouldn't expect less.
When the sun is setting in the background, there is a good orange glow in the sky with a heavy shadow opposite of the sun. At night it is hard to see - hopefully, otherwise it wouldn't be very realistic, now, would it?! - and that is when you whip out your handy-dandy night vision or heat sensitive goggles. The heat sensitive goggles are hard to use at long ranges, especially in cold weather because of the loss of heat from the distance. The night vision goggles work like a charm (unless, of course it's daytime).
The range of weapons in this game is amazing. Part of the fun in this game is replaying levels with different guns. The basic weapon scheme for the game is: rifle, sub-machine gun; pistol, grenade launcher; and the last two slots are for hand held grenades or gas masks. The incredible range of weapons doesn't exclude grenades. You can choose lethal or non-lethal grenades.
The sound quality is amazing. The guns sound real. The grenades sound real, and the background music is perfectly fitting for the game. I love the orchestra music in the menu and the elevator music in the break rooms surrounded by terrorists.
The only thing that could bother people is the constant screaming and "Over here!!!" that the terrorists yell.
This was one of the first games to implement the headset to command the rest of your team. It works fairly well. You have to make sure that you e-nun-ci-ate your commands; otherwise, it is best to just do it from your controller. It is easier using the headset, though.
The multiplayer for this game is great … if you can find somebody that plays the game. Most everyone that played this game is on "Rainbow Six: Vegas" by now; and since this game didn't switch to the Xbox 360, it will be very hard to find someone to play. This game when it started online was the "Halo 2" before "Halo 2." It was great fast-paced action that never stopped. Now it is practically barren.
"Rainbow Six 3" has fluid controls that are easy to understand which helps out with the replay value. It requires a good amount of strategy, too. Even the training course that you go through has fun, strategic elements in it. The enemies aren't always in the same place, but there is always an equal amount, so it's a different level every time.
This is a great game to play with a friend and even by yourself. It will be hard to find people to play with you, but for only $5 and an Xbox, this is a steal. This is a great quality first-person shooter that will not let you down, unless you want some "Max Payne" or "Morrowind" action. The bottom line: "Rainbow Six 3" for the Xbox 8.5/10.
